Practical technology training

Course outline for Terraform

Connect the concepts, work through practical problems, and choose a training plan that fits your goals.

About Terraform

Terraform describes infrastructure through provider-backed configuration and tracks managed objects in state. Learn to review plans, organize reusable modules, and control state and credentials before applying changes. Use a local lab target to practice without creating paid resources.

Terraform Course Objectives

  • Write and validate HCL configuration.
  • Inspect a plan before changing infrastructure.
  • Manage variables, outputs, dependencies, and modules.
  • Protect state, credentials, and approval records.
  • Diagnose drift and plan safe lifecycle changes.

Pre-requisites

  • Basic cloud infrastructure, networking, and operating-system knowledge.
  • Familiarity with Git, command-line tools, and configuration files.

Lab Setup

  • Terraform CLI, Git, editor, and a version-pinned local provider/target.
  • Synthetic environment definitions, prepared remote-state examples, and dummy credentials.
  • No cloud account is required; any optional provider lab needs an agreed cost limit and cleanup plan.

Detailed Course Outline

Infrastructure as Code

  • Declarative configuration and desired state
  • Providers, resources, and data sources
  • Terraform's responsibilities and limits
  • Provider versions and dependency lock files

HCL Configuration

  • Blocks, expressions, and types
  • Variables, locals, and outputs
  • Collections and conditional expressions
  • Input validation and sensitive values

Plan and Apply Workflow

  • Initialization, formatting, and validation
  • Reading additions, updates, and replacements
  • Saved plans and exact-change approval
  • Apply failures and final-state inspection

Resource Dependencies

  • References and dependency graphs
  • Iteration with for_each and count
  • Lifecycle controls and replacement risk
  • Explicit dependencies and their tradeoffs

State and Collaboration

  • State ownership and backend configuration
  • Locking and concurrent changes
  • Backups and sensitive data in state
  • Access controls beyond terminal output masking

Reusable Modules

  • Module inputs, outputs, and contracts
  • Versioning and provider requirements
  • Separating environment configuration
  • Testing reusable infrastructure boundaries

Existing Resources and Drift

  • Importing existing infrastructure
  • Inspecting drift and proposed reconciliation
  • Refactoring addresses with supported mechanisms
  • Reviewing destructive changes and recovery assumptions

Delivery and Maintenance

  • Plan checks in CI
  • Credential scope and environment approvals
  • Provider upgrades and compatibility checks
  • Cost review and resource cleanup

Practical Exercise

  • Define a local environment using a reusable module
  • Review and apply a saved plan to an approved lab target
  • Inject drift and diagnose a changed configuration
  • Verify expected resources and document state backup and cleanup
