Connect the concepts, work through practical problems, and choose a training plan that fits your goals.

About Quarkus

Quarkus provides a Java application framework with developer tooling and cloud-oriented packaging. Build a tested REST service, configure persistence and health checks, and compare JVM deployment with native-image requirements using a supplied project.

Quarkus Course Objectives

  • Create and configure a Quarkus service.
  • Implement REST endpoints, dependency injection, and validation.
  • Use transactions and test persistence boundaries.
  • Add health, telemetry, and scoped access checks.
  • Package a JVM service and evaluate native-image tradeoffs.

Pre-requisites

  • Working knowledge of Java and HTTP/JSON APIs.
  • Familiarity with Maven or Gradle and unit testing.
  • Basic SQL and container knowledge are useful for the lab.

Lab Setup

  • Supported JDK, Maven or Gradle wrapper, Git, and code editor.
  • Version-pinned Quarkus starter with a local test database and container tooling for Dev Services.
  • Native-image work uses a preconfigured compatible toolchain or supplied build traces; no cloud account is required.

Detailed Course Outline

Quarkus Fundamentals

  • Framework and extension architecture
  • Project generation and build tooling
  • Development mode and live reload
  • Configuration profiles and dependency versions

REST Services

  • Routes, parameters, and JSON responses
  • Request validation and error mapping
  • Blocking and reactive execution choices
  • Defining API contracts

Dependency Injection and Lifecycle

  • CDI beans and scopes
  • Injecting application dependencies
  • Startup and shutdown behavior
  • Testable service boundaries

Persistence and Transactions

  • Datasources and connection settings
  • Hibernate ORM and Panache concepts
  • Transactions and data constraints
  • Local schema/data setup and migration responsibilities

Application Testing

  • Unit and Quarkus integration tests
  • HTTP endpoint assertions
  • Dev Services and disposable dependencies
  • Testing validation, failures, and unauthorized requests

Operational Features

  • Health and readiness checks
  • Metrics, tracing, and structured logs
  • Fault-tolerance options and retry limits
  • Authentication versus application authorization

Packaging and Deployment

  • JVM artifacts and container images
  • Environment and secret configuration
  • Native-image build requirements and compatibility
  • Measuring startup and memory instead of assuming improvement

Practical Exercise

  • Build a REST service with validated input and local persistence
  • Test transactions, errors, and access checks
  • Add health endpoints and produce a container/JVM artifact
  • Compare supplied native-build evidence and document deployment assumptions
